Keratoconus Management

Keratoconus is a condition that causes the cornea (the clear surface on the front of the eye) to gradually thin and bulge into a cone shape. The cone shaped cornea usually causes myopia and astigmatism, resulting in blurry and distorted vision.

Good news is that the vast majority of patients with keratoconus will never require surgery. In fact, for over 90% of patients with keratoconus non-surgical keratoconus treatment is all they will need.

  • Penetrating keratoplasty. If you have corneal scarring or extreme thinning, you'll likely need a cornea transplant (keratoplasty). Penetrating keratoplasty is a full-cornea transplant. In this procedure, doctors remove a full-thickness portion of your central cornea and replace it with donor tissue.
  • Anterior lamellar keratoplasty (ALK). In ALK, the surgeon dissects the cornea into two thin pieces and removes the front, scarred part. A matching area of healthy tissue from a donor cornea is then used to replace the area that was removed. This procedure is less invasive than a penetrating keratoplasty.
